The Year in Review : 2011

2011 was a rather meh year overall. Meh anime, meh TV shows. meh score, meh games, and meh movies.

But it wasn’t all meh, some was just fucking terrible, and some were amazingly great.

Here’s the year in review.

Anime TV series

Winter

  • IS Infinite Stratos

[Completed 12/12 episodes.]
I`m not too sure what to think of that one. I`d say I enjoyed it as a whole. Was it a good show ? F*ck no ! It was Generic Harem # 27353 with all the clichés in the world, but you know what ? that was actually fun. Nothing too complicated to watch, just a decent show where you could disconnect your brain…and. enjoy. I even chuckled a few times.
The Opening and Ending songs were rather meh, and I can’t recall the Score making any sort of impression on me.
Overall:  2.75/5

  • Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?

Completed 12/12 episodes.
Oh, man THIS show. One of my favourite of the season. It can’t really describe why I liked this show so much. The humour, the randomness, it was all there for me. Beside the bullshit drama arc, this was a very good show.
The Opening song was Catchy, the Ending was rather enjoyable ( Manzo ftw). The score however, didn’t leave any kind of impression on me.
Overall: 3.75/5

Spring

  • Dog Days

Watched 6/12 episodes.
As of writing this, I still haven’t finished this show, and doing so is not a priority to me. Not because it’s bad or anything, but it’s not mind blowing either. It’s just… is.  I get nothing from watching this. I don’t thrive to watch for the next episode, it’s like there’s no challenge. Unlike IS which was Generic Harem #27353 but with fanservice and some sort of humor, or something else, Dog Days is just WAY too neutral.
The Opening is decent ( Generic Nana Mizuki song #3434 (don’t burn me) )  and the Ending song…I don’t even remember what it sounded like. Eh. As for the Score, same as the previous ones, no major impression.
Overall (based on what I’ve seen): 3/5

  • TIGER & BUNNY

Completed 24/24 episodes.
What I think most considered the GEM of 2011, Tiger & Bunny, or Anime for Adults as some would refer to it.
Great show, great story, great characters, great score, great everything. Basically all that has already been said about it. Sunrise understand that and are probably going to milk that until the end of times, but it’s cool, we’ll remember how awesome the first series was.
I think it’s safe to say it’s my favourite of the year.
Great Opening and Ending songs. The score by Yoshihiro Ike was pretty awesome too, couldn’t get any better score to go along that show.
Overall: 5/5

  • Hanasaku Iroha

Completed 26/26 episodes.
Ah, Hanasaku., the peculiar one. The animation was pretty good and…beautiful, but the characters felt flat at first. I couldn’t get attached to either of them, and actually had to take a break from watching it because I felt like snapping the Main character’s neck. However, I’m glad I decided to see through the end, the characters did end up growing on me.
The Opening and Ending song were rather uninteresting to me, but oh well. As for the score, I can’t recall what it sounded like.
Overall 4/5

  • Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai
completed 12/12
I think that one is my favorite of the year. Not just one of my favorite, but my favorite. Adapting another Navel Game, Oretsuba was a very charming show I just can’t help to love . Of all the shows that entertained me this year, this one is the one that entertained me the most. It just a shame it was so short.
Will definitly revisit again.
The opening and ending songs where pretty great, but I just can’t remember anything about the score.
Overall 4.5/5
  • Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi

Watched 10/12 episodes.
Eh, HoshiKaka was Generic Harem show #27354. There’s not much to say about it. It wasn’t bad, but wasn’t ground breaking either. It was just decent.
Opening was sorta catchy I guess. Ending songs are score were forgettable.
Overall 3/5

  • C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control

Completed 11/11 episodes.
Economics 101, the anime…. Expect not really. I’m not sure what it is that C tried to accomplish, but I don’t think it succeeded. It had a weird mix of CG and animation. The show wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good either. It was so – so. Maybe I’d have enjoyed it more if I had the economic notions they blabled on in the show.
I think this show had a lot more to offer than was what given, but oh well.
The Opening song was pretty good, the Ending song by the wonderful school food punishment. The score composed by Iwasaku Taki is not…his best work so far. It was gritty and had “fatigue” written all over it. That being said, it’s Iwasaku Taki.
Overall: 3/5

  • Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko

Watched 6/12 episodes.
The show that should have ended after episode 4. I actually can’t say much about this show. As of writing this, I never pasted half of it. The first four episode were pretty good, but the subsequent, not so much. Couldn’t help but wonder where this was going, and wasn’t really encouraged in finding out.
The Opening is quite catchy however. The ending song put me to sleep. The score is…forgettable.
Overall: ?/5

Summer

  • Sacred Seven

Completed 12/12 episodes.
Oh gawd Sacred Seven. I don’t think I have anything constructive to say about this.
So here is a comic on S7.
For some reason, halfway through it, the show switched their opening and endings.
They weren’t bad, but they sure weren’t the best of 2011, and not even the score by Toshihiko Sahashi. Couldn’t help save the show.
Overall: 1/5

  • Kami-sama Dolls

Completed 12/12 episodes.
Another of my favourite from 2011. It was far from being good, but it was rather enjoyable and entertaining, and that’s pretty much all I ask for in anime. I was actually going to drop this after 2 episodes, but I’m glad I saw it to the end. There were a lot of unnecessary moment, but it still didn’t deter me from enjoying it.
The opening and Ending were performed by Ishikawa Chiaki, and I think it’s safe to blame her for increasing my liking of this show. Can’t recall the score, but I think I enjoyed it.
Also, *crossing fingers for season 2*
Overall: 3.75/5

  • BLOOD-C

Completed 12/12 episodes.
Deception: The anime.
Oh blood-c, the latest of the Blood series, after the movie and Blood +.
Blood-c advertised itself as the latest cooperation between CLAMP and Production I.G.
Seeing as I love CLAMP and how well their last cooperation went ( TRC OVAs) , I could not help but be exited about this. Perhaps I had too high expectations, but the end result was…err…not satisfying.
The beginning was good, had a very CLAMP feeling to it , it was mysterious, with clamp-humour , air-head characters, with hints of plot dropping here and there. At some point, the plot teasing started getting annoying only to have it being vomited on to us in the last 30min of the show. All the previous character development goes down the shitter as people weren’t who they pretended to be in a (bad) twist… which could have been good if properly done.

At least, the movie looks good.
The Opening by Dustz is contender for Best Opening song of 2011. I liked it so much I started watching Ga-Ro, in which the lead singer stars, more on that later.
The Ending song by Nana Mizuki is pretty good. If I sounded like I didn’t like Nana earlier, well that is not the case, I quite like her, I just don’t like how most of her anisongs sound the same. This one was different however, so I enjoyed it.
The score by Naoki Satou was pretty darn impressive, but that’s redundant, whatever Naoki does is impressive.
Overall: 3.5/5

  • Mayo Chiki!

Completed 12/12 episodes.
Not entirely sure what to say about Mayo Chiki. So I’ll be brief: Watched it, enjoyed it, and done. No but seriously, there’s not really much to say about it. The character design was good, characters were entertaining, the story was pointless (was there even one to begin with?) but yeah, it was enjoyable.
The opening song was catchy, but I can’t remember anything about the ending song, and lets not even mention the score.
Overall: 3.5/5

  • Mawaru Penguindrum

Seen 6/24 episodes.
Mawaru is the show I should have dropped after the first episode , but that for some reason I chose not too , only to later regret the decision.
I understand that the show cater to a certain group of people, but the more I watch the harder it is to put any sense into watching it. The biggest problem coming from the fact that i don’t find the show entertaining, and hate more than half of the cast.
My beef is that now that I have watched almost half of it, I feel compelled to see it though the end. Logic dictates that I drop it since I clearly don’t enjoy it, but I just can’t find the resolve to end it. I like seeing things though their ends once I start.
It’s creative, I’ll give it that, and the hijinks are sometimes fun, by no means am I saying it’s a bad show, I just can’t find it in me to like it. Oh and no, I have not watched Utena, but now I know I’ll never touch it, not even with a 10 feet pole.
I was able to put the show on hold for a bit, if all goes well, by the time I remember it exists, I’ll have lost any kind of impulse to complete it.
I’ll have to say I rather enjoyed the first opening song. That’s it.
Overall: 3/5

  • Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni!

completed 12/12 episodes.
Sequel of the first BakaTest season, a show that gave me epic laughs, well, BakaTest2… is not as good. The funny dropped down a lot, but the show was still enjoyable nonetheless.
Don’t have anything else to add.
Good opening and endings. Forgettable score.
Overall: 3/5

  • Dantalian no Shoka
    Completed 11/11
Yet again , another one of my favorites. I’ve steer clear of Gosick despite the fact that I love victorian settings show , but I decided to give a chance to dantalian and I don’t regret it. I loved Dantalian a whole lot. The music, the setting, the characters, all was there for me to enjoy. The show was far from perfect, had some flaws, but they were transparent to me. I was entertained.  Don’t think there’s much else to add.
    Overall 3.75/5

Fall

    • Fate/Zero
      Completed 13/13
Part I of the prequel to Fate/Stay Night,  Fate/Zero was ufotable’s tale on Urobushi’s novel. Needless to say it was pretty freakin awesome.  That’s all I have to say. One of thing that sightly disappointed  me was that they didn’t take Kenji for the score, as I’ve grown used to associating his score to the fate universe, but I can’t complain much as they chose Kajiura instead, and well Kajiura is a goddess.
      Overall 5/5
    • Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!!
      Completed 12/12
One good show of 2011. Adpated from of game by the same guy that made Kimiaruji ( Ageha-sama !!!!)
Quirky humor, insteresting characters, Majikoi did a good job at entertaining me, but I think the anime was lacking something I can’t quite put my finger on.
Decent opening and ending. Forgettable score.
      Overall 3/5

    • Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon
      Completed 13/13
Not really sure what to say about Horizon. I enjoyed it, but it took me a while to get into it. I watched it, but I think I barely grapsed 60% of what was going on.
Too much information came out at the same time.
      I think that’s about it.
Nice opening and endings, pretty entertaining score.
      overall 3.75/5

    • Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle
      Watched 6/25
Phi Brain is sunrised lastest attempt at originaliyu. It isn’t bad. The character design is all over the top. I think JunJun’s character is what makes the show for me.
Catchy Opening, lovely ending , forgettable score
      overall 3/5
    • Mashiro-iro Symphony
      Completed 12/12
The harem show in which the lead character actually chooses someone, too bad it’s the most boring girl in the show.  It was interesting while it lasted. That’s all I have to say.
Decent opening  , catchy ending song, …was there a score ?
      Overall 3/5
    • Ben-To
      Completed 12/12
That show was over the top ridiculous. As far as I am concerned, it makes it a contender for BEST SHOW of 2011. wasn’t found of the last couple of episodes however, but damn the show was good.
Decent opening and ending songs. I can’t remember the score.
      Overall 3/5
    • Mobile Suit Gundam AGE
      Watched 12/50
Gundam AGE is that show that most started hating even before it aired for weird reasons.
On my hand , I pretty darn enjoy it. Yes, It’s gundam toned down a bit, but not that much when you think about it. I think it has a lot of potential, and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
      Also I love the score.
Opening song that grows on you, and pretty catching ending song. Lovely score.
      Overall 3/5

    • UN-GO
      Completed 11/11
The sorta “noir” show I watched this year. Un-go did a pretty good job at keeping me entertained. Definitly a good show that not enough people watched. Shame. Ain’t much else to say.
Here’s to hoping for a second season.
Catchy opening and ending songs, decent score.
      Overall 4/5

    • Guilty Crown
Watched 10/25
The show to drop, every episodes.  Guilty Crown is a combination of good and terrible mixed in a magnificent trainwreck.
Yeah, that’s all I have to say about it.
Pretty good Opening , ending and insert songs. The score is pretty great too.
Overall 3/5
=====
Yeah, so that was my quick review of the year in anime tv series. I’d expend, but there wasn’t that much to say. The year was really pretty meh.
Shall do awards tommorow.
